Recently, on a beautiful afternoon, I was sitting on the patio with the dogs.  I closed my eyes for a minute and noticed how quiet it became, all of the sudden.  I didn’t hear the normal sounds of a toddler screaming a few doors down, the soon to be second grader next door talking or singing to herself while swinging, music coming from the neighbors, dogs barking, loud cars speeding by, airplanes overhead or even really loud bird chirping.  I took a moment to notice and truly enjoy the silence. It was fleeting and soon all the sounds were back. It wasn’t long before I heard the familiar sound of a car flying over the speed bump and my dogs were barking at a bicyclist speeding down the street.

I believe that it’s in the silence that we can truly learn about ourselves but it’s not an easy thing to find in our world. Try to take a moment and enjoy a little silence in your life, even if it’s only for a moment.
